It has become clear to me that a need exists for a new genre in art. In addition to still life, portrait, landscape, installation, performance and others, I propose "transference." In a transference, the representation of a person or other entity is reinterpreted to a different medium.
This broad definition encompasses all media, from moving images to photographs to audio recordings, to name only a few possibilities. A polaroid transfer is one example of a transference, so are the "Dibujos" by Thomas Ruff, paintings by Gerhard Richter and so is a clone of Jesus Christ created with DNA from the Shroud of Turin.
With each transference, the orginal representation is inherently changed. The paintings in Project|Capture are not portraits, they are transferences with all that the word implies: technology, duplication, reinterpretation, transcendence, the extraction of a part of the essence of what it is to be a human being.
